Cleaning & Sealing FAQs

By cleaning and resealing you can restore the grout and tiles beautiful, lustrous appearance.
Our Tile Cleaners ® professional team will go through the job processes step by step so you know exactly what your getting. The slate floor is thoroughly cleaned and neutralised so that it is free of dust, residue and anything else that can affect the new sealer. The new sealer is then applied to the dry slate floor and allowed to set. The newly sealed slate tiles will not only look as new again, it will also protect the slate surface for longer and make it much easier to clean.
It all depends on the size of the area that we are cleaning and sealing but most jobs take 4 - 8 hours to complete, we do cleaning and sealing in the same day so you don't have to fuss with more than one appointment.

Some stains penetrate the stone and settle in below the surface and can be very difficult to remove. It is important for us to strip, clean and seal your floor so in the future nothing will be able to stain your slate floors.

We charge per square meter for each separate slate room. There is a price list on the cleaners website for you to review. We prefer you measure each room individually before we come so when we charge you in the end it will be fast and easy for everyone.
We recommend that you measure each slate room separately. They way to measure is the width * length. For example a room that is 3 meters long and 2 meters wide is 3 * 2 = 6m2 in total.
Tile Cleaners® technicians can help to move items that one person could be expected to move such as furniture with wheels, light furniture, tables and chairs, however as Tile Cleaners® insurance covers our restoration services, we will not be held liable for any damage caused to furniture or property you request our technicians to move.
Tile Cleaners® colour enhancing sealer may help hide some small scratches, but we cannot guarantee that your slate will return to its original condition. Deepshield™ Penetrating Colour Enhancing Sealer darkens your slate tiles by up to 20% and can help camouflage etches, restoring the natural, new look of your slate floors.
A sealer is a liquid, or carrier containing a resin that is applied to porous natural stone or man made surfaces that helps prevent staining from water and/or oil based materials as well as help to achieve better results when cleaning your surfaces.
Sealers are different from polishers and are actually designed to keep liquids and dirt particles from sinking into the natural stone. It is extremely important to have your slate tiles sealed. All slate tiles should be sealed when they are first installed; this initial seal can last up to 15 years when a quality sealer is applied. It is important to call us as soon as your slate floors are installed so we can protect them before any accidental permanent damage occurs.
The best sealer to use for slate around swimming pools is our high quality Impregnating Penetrating Water Based Sealer that protects your stone to the core and eliminates the slipperiness factor other sealers can create with slate.
Tile Cleaners® advise the simple "water test". The water test is well known in the stone industry and it will help you determine whether your slate floors require sealing. First you need to place a few drops of water on your stone and let it set for around 10 to 30 minutes then wipe it dry. If your stone did not darken, it means your slate is perfectly sealed and does not require sealing, but if it has darkened, it means that the water was able to penetrate your stone and sealing is required.
All of our sealing products are water based, we do not apply solvent- based sealer except in certain cases where it is the only option. The sealer will not affect the texture of your slate tiles in any way; however, it will protect your slate from staining and maintain that lustrous, natural finish you are looking for.
Yes we do. Colour enhancer is a compound designed to enrich the natural look of slate. It darkens and enhances the colour of your tiles and brings out the stones natural beauty, giving a slight wet/low sheen look.
Tile Cleaners® colours enhancer will not affect the texture of your slate floors, however, it will enhance the colour of your surfaces and bring out the natural beauty of your slate.
Our professional team will go through the job processes with you step by step so you know exactly what you're getting. The process includes stripping any previous sealer if it was applied, the slate is then thoroughly cleaned and neutralised so that it is free of dust, residue and anything else that can affect the new sealer. A new sealer is applied to the dry slate floor and allowed to set. The newly sealed slate floor will not only look new again, it will be protected and result in your slate becoming easier to maintain.
It takes 4 hours to be touch dry and normally 24 hours for the sealer to fully cure, which is when you can put everything back into place. Nothing hard such as furniture can be moved on to the tiles and grout for at least 24 hours.
Tile Cleaners® apply two main types of high quality sealer, deep penetrating sealer and topical sealer. Topical Sealer has lifetime expectancy of around 3 years and Australia's Deepshield™ range of impregnating water based sealer's last for up to 10 years while Deepshield™ Gold based on the latest fluoro-bond technology can last for up to 15 years dependent on usage and weather conditions.
Deepshield™ Impregnating Penetrating Sealer does not alter the slipperiness of your slate tiles' surface as the sealer penetrates the top layer of your slate. Topical Sealer may result in your slate floors becoming slippery when wet. To maintain the look and slip resistance of your slate and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your surfaces with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.
Any acidic substance is harmful for your slate tiles, they can be etched (eaten/corroded) easily and sealing against acid attack is very difficult. The best way to protect your slate tiles from acid attack is to seal and clean spills immediately. The high porosity of stone based tiles makes sealing a must in order to provide protection against future acid attack and liquid spillage.
Tile Cleaners® colour enhancing sealer may help hide those nasty scratches you have, but we cannot guarantee that they return to their original condition. Deepshield™ Penetrating Colour Enhancing Sealer darkens your slate tiles by up to 20% and can help camouflage etches, restoring the natural, new look of your slate floors.
Tile Cleaners® technicians can help to move items that one person could be expected to move such as furniture with wheels, light furniture, tables and chairs, however as Tile Cleaners® insurance covers our restoration services, we will not be held liable for any damage caused to furniture or property you request our technicians to move.
Move all furniture and items off your slate floors so they are ready for when we arrive.
If your vinyl floors are old, badly scratched and discoloured, we can strip old sealers and reseal them with a high quality gloss finish to restore the look the vinyl. Resealing will also extend the wear of your floors and reduce the appearance of marks and scratches so as to guard against dirt penetration and abrasion.
That depends on the area and how it is used. Commercial floors will usually require resealing every year or two, while with residential floors, its good to have them sealed every 3-10 years depending on foot traffic and use. It also depends on the quality of the sealer that is used and the way it has been applied. If you have the procedure professionally done you will get the most out of it and be saving time and money.
Vinyl strip and seal is simply the process of stripping the coating off the vinyl floor before resealing it. Vinyl flooring can look dull and lifeless over time, making it look older and really bringing down the feel of the home. By stripping and resealing it, you can bring the vinyl back up to a beautiful, lustrous appearance and eliminate the cost of laying new flooring.
Our professional team will go through the job processes step by step so you know exactly what your getting . The process of stripping the floor is to ensure that all the old sealer is removed. The floor is then thoroughly cleaned and neutralised so that it is free of dust, residue and anything else that can affect the new sealer. The new sealer is then applied to the dry floor and allowed to set. A sealer is a substance that, when applied to a porous surface that prevents the transmission of liquids through that surface. Sealers may dry to a shiny finish when applied to the floor but they are not intended to be burnished to a shine like a polish is - you'll get your shine but eventually you will wear the seal through. Sealers are intended to be a permanent barrier between the surface to be treated and liquids. Generally a seal goes down first, followed by polish buffing.
Sealers are different from polishes and are actually designed to keep liquids and dirt particles from sinking into the vinyl. All vinyl should be sealed when it is first installed, and this initial seal can last many years, especially if the vinyl is polished regularly. It is important to call us as soon as your floors are installed so we can come and protect them before you do any accidental permanent damage.
The floor should only be resealed when the coating is starting to wear away in places. Sealers, polishes, and finishes are often used interchangeably, and some polishes do have sealing effects while other products labeled finishers are actually sealants, so be sure to carefully inspect products if you decided to buy them.
Most concrete sealers dry fairly quickly and are usually touch-dry after 4 hours. This is true of both penetrating and topical sealers. Penetrating sealers usually fully cure in 24 hours with topical sealers generally taking up to 48 hours to fully dry.
Concrete surfaces are subject to deterioration and degradation of appearance through traffic, UV rays, moisture, rain, chemicals, and other impurities such as oil, gas, grease, acids and salt. This can easily result in common problems such as cracking, pitting, scaling, spalling, delamination, dusting, discolouration, efflorescence, salt damage, etc. Concrete sealing offers excellent maintenance benefits when quality products such as Australia's Deepshield™ deep impregnating sealers.
No, topical sealers create a membrane, film, or barrier that prevents the penetrating sealers from absorbing into the surface. Applying a penetrating sealer to a surface, requires any topical sealer to be removed prior to application.
The best way to keep your polished concrete in good condition is to use a ph neutral cleaner followed by clean water for spills, otherwise a microfibre mop will get rid of dust.
Concrete is a porous material that readily absorbs liquids. In freeze-thaw climates, the expansion of frozen liquids can destroy the surface of unsealed concrete. Oil, salt, fertiliser, and other household chemicals can discolour and damage unsealed concrete.
You will know it's time to have your concrete floors stripped, cleaned and sealed once they begin to appear dull or "matte" even after you have given them an efficient regular clean. If you notice that your concrete surfaces are staining easily, it's a good indication that your previous sealer is wearing off and your concrete floors will need to be resealed immediately to prevent permanent staining.
Yes, our tile cleaning services are safe! Tile Cleaners® generally use only the highest quality water based products alongside our state of the art cleaning machinery to provide the best cleaning solution without compromising your concrete surfaces.
Tile Cleaners® prefer to use high quality non-solvent based stripping and sealing products. These products are not messy and won't damage your concrete floors or anything else in your home. Current non-solvent based strippers and techniques are more than adequate. Tile Cleaners® technicians can apply solvent based strippers in very specific circumstances, however this requires leaving the premises for up to 48 hours and a very high level of safety and protection.
Here at Tile Cleaners® we understand the importance of your family's safety, which is why Tile Cleaners® prefer to use non-toxic finishing agents as we not only want to protect your polished concrete floors, but your families health too. Materials and agents that present potential health hazards are not in our product portfolio and never have been.
If you want your concrete floors to be their cleanest and looking their very best you need to have a professional remove as much of the old sealer as possible. Once this is done the cleaning process will be carried out and the sealer applied. You will have the freshest and cleanest possible polished concrete floors once we are finished with the process.

Australia's Deepshield™ range of deep impregnating water based sealer's, offer long term benefits with Deepshield™ Gold lasting up to 15 years. Topical sealer's have a life expectancy of around 3 years. If you have a high amount of foot traffic or perhaps severe weather conditions(for outdoor concrete), you may experience a shorter lifetime. Sealing your polished concrete may also depend on the surfaces condition. Once they start showing patchy areas and are staining easily then you should have them resealed. Give us a call and we can assist you with all your enquiries.
Concrete floors can damage fairly easily, any oily or harsh spills can damage the surface and penetrate the pores leaving a permanent stain, unreachable by domestic cleaning methods. We strongly recommend sealing you concrete surfaces to keep its fresh look and feel, to protect it against permanent staining and to prevent any future accidental damage. Your surfaces will look their very best for longer and will be easier and more convenient to maintain.
The best time to have your concrete sealed is immediately after installation to prevent any accidental staining or damage. You will know that concrete needs sealing once you start noticing patchy sealed areas of the floor and/or your concrete starts staining easier.
Efflorescence is a problem that concrete and most porous surfaces can face. It's the tendency of the water in the concrete to bring salts from the material to the surface as it evaporates. The water evaporates leaving the salts on the surface resulting in a whitish coating and ruining its finish. The only way to avoid this problem is to seal your concrete with one of our highest quality water resistant sealer's and to stop the source of the water that is penetrating the concrete, for example a water pipe leak or damaged grout.
Yes we can. Efflorescence is a build up of salts and can be removed with efflorescence removers and other specialised cleaning techniques. Efflorescence is typically caused by a leakage behind the concrete or through damaged grout lines. The efflorescence can be removed but it is important the cause of the efflorescence is resoled.
To keep your concrete surfaces looking new, Tile Cleaners® recommend cleaning each week with a mild detergent to remove any dirt or grime from the concrete surface. Strong detergents(strong acid or alkali) may affect the sealer, mild detergents and pH neutral substances are strongly recommended.
Tile Cleaners® charge per square meter for each separate room. There is a price list on the Tile Cleaners® website for you to review. Before we begin our work we will measure each room individually, confirm the work to be carried out as well as confirm all costs with you.
We recommend that you measure each concreted area separately. The simplest way to measure is by multiplying the width by the length. For example a room that is 3 meters long and 2 meters wide is 3 X 2 = 6m2 in total.

Between 2-4 coats. Depending on many factors, including the finish desired.
Sealing your tiles means that when spills occur, you have time to clean it or wipe them off before it stains, but it does not guarantee that your tiles will not stain, as the spill and dirt still need to be cleaned.
That depends on the type os sealer used, and the number of coats applied.
Having a professional seal your tiles ensures you that the correct type of sealer is applied according to industry standards and that the tiles have been thoroughly and professional cleaned prior to sealing. Sealing over dirt and other blemishes results in the sealer locking in these blemishes which is why professional cleaning prior to sealing is required.
Nothing is maintenance free! Sealing makes your surface easier to clean and harder to stain. Contaminants can sit on the surface longer, so you have more time to clean before any staining occurs. On some unsealed tiles and stone, staining can start immediately. Think of your stone sealing product as a bottle of time. No stone sealing product will make a porous surface stain-proof, but will make it highly stain resistant. Using the correct stone cleaning products also makes a difference.

The process includes stripping any previous sealer if it was applied, the floor is then thoroughly cleaned and neutralised so that it is free of dust, residue and anything else that can affect the new sealer. A new sealer is applied to the floor and allowed to set. The newly sealed floor will not only look new again, it will be protected and result in your floors becoming easier to maintain.
It depends on the type of sealer used and the amount of foot traffic the tiles are being exposed to. Australia's Deepshield™ range of deep impregnating water based sealer's offer long term benefits with Deepshield™ Gold lasting up to 15 years. Topical sealer's have a life expectancy of around 3 years. If you have a high amount of foot traffic or perhaps severe weather conditions you may experience a shorter lifetime. Sealing your surfaces may also depend on the surfaces condition. Once they start showing patchy areas and are staining easily then you should have them resealed. Give us a call and we can assist you with all your enquiries.
Many types of flooring can damage fairly easily, any oily or harsh spills can damage the surface and penetrate the pores leaving a permanent stain, unreachable by domestic cleaning methods. We strongly recommend sealing your surfaces to maintain their fresh look and feel, to protect against permanent staining and to prevent any future accidental damage. Your surfaces will look their very best for longer and will be easier and more convenient to maintain.
The best time to have your tiles or grout sealed is immediately after installation to prevent accidental staining or damage. You will know sealing is required once you start noticing patchy sealed areas of the floor and/or your tiles start staining easier.
Efflorescence is a problem that most porous surfaces can face. It's the tendency of the water to bring salts from the material to the surface as it evaporates. The water evaporates leaving the salts on the surface resulting in a whitish coating and ruining its finish. The only way to avoid this problem is to seal with one of our highest quality water resistant sealer's and to stop the source of the water that is penetrating the material, for example a water pipe leak or damaged grout.
Yes we can. Efflorescence is a build up of salts and can be removed with efflorescence removers and other specialised cleaning techniques. Efflorescence is typically caused by a leakage behind the stone, tiles or through damaged grout lines. The efflorescence can be removed but it is important the cause of the efflorescence is resoled.
That depends on the type of tile you have and the intended use.
Tile Cleaners® charge per square meter for each separate room. There is a price list on the Tile Cleaners® website for you to review. Before we begin our work we will measure each room individually, confirm the work to be carried out as well as confirm all costs with you.
We recommend that you measure each area separately. The simplest way to measure is by multiplying the width by the length. For example a room that is 3 meters long and 2 meters wide is 3 X 2 = 6m2 in total.
Tile Cleaners® technicians can help to move items that one person could be expected to move such as furniture with wheels, light furniture, tables and chairs, however as Tile Cleaners® insurance covers our restoration services, we will not be held liable for any damage caused to furniture or property you request our technicians to move.
If your stone is natural stone (slate, marble, granite, travertine, sandstone etc.) then it will need to be sealed. Stone is naturally porous and will absorb spills and stain easily.
Most stone surfaces are subject to deterioration and degradation of appearance through traffic, UV rays, moisture, rain, chemicals, and other impurities such as oil, gas, grease, acids and salt. This can easily result in common problems such as cracking, pitting, scaling, spalling, delamination, dusting, discolouration, efflorescence, salt damage, etc. Sealing stone offers excellent maintenance benefits when quality products are used such as Australia's Deepshield™ deep impregnating range of sealers.
Sealing your tiles & grout can help:
- Prevent unsightly stains
- Prevent discolouration
- Keep your tiled floors looking better for longer
This depends on the type of sealer you decide to seal your stone with. Topical sealers usually have a lifetime of around 3 years, while impregnating sealers have a lifetime of up to 15 years. On vertical surfaces impregnating sealers could last a lifetime, however, on heavy walkway areas or heavily used areas such as shower recesses, the areas should be checked more often and re-sealed if necessary. You can test how porous your surfaces are by applying a drop of water to the surface and watching how it is absorbed. You can then see how any type of water based stain can be absorbed by the stone surface.
Yes you can and it is recommended to seal your grout lines especially if they are a light colour, this will save you the likely cost of having to regrout your tiles only a few years after installation.
Whenever needed, and that depends on the type and quality of sealer used and the lifetime of the sealer.
The best way to keep stone surfaces in good condition is to use a ph neutral cleaner followed by clean water for spills, otherwise a microfibre mop will get rid of dust.
You will know it's time to have your stone stripped, cleaned and sealed once it begins to appear dull or "matte" even after you have given it an efficient regular clean. If you notice that your surfaces are staining easily, it's a good indication that your previous sealer is wearing off and your stone will need to be resealed immediately to prevent permanent staining.
Yes, our tile cleaning services are safe! Tile Cleaners® generally use only the highest quality water based products alongside our state of the art cleaning machinery to provide the best cleaning solution without compromising your stone surfaces.
Tile Cleaners® prefer to use high quality non-solvent based stripping and sealing products. These products are not messy and won't damage your stone or anything else in your home. Current non-solvent based strippers and techniques are more than adequate. Tile Cleaners® technicians can apply solvent based strippers in very specific circumstances, however this requires leaving the premises for up to 48 hours and a very high level of safety and protection.
Here at Tile Cleaners® we understand the importance of your family's safety, which is why Tile Cleaners® prefer to use non-toxic finishing agents as we not only want to protect your floors, but your families health too. Materials and agents that present potential health hazards are not in our product portfolio and never have been.
If you want your stone to be its cleanest and looking its very best you need to have a professional remove as much of the old sealer as possible. Once this is done the cleaning process will be carried out and the new sealer applied. You will have the freshest and cleanest possible stone surfaces once we are finished with the process.
Stripping and sealing is simply the process of stripping the coating off the stone before resealing it. Stone surfaces can appear dull and lifeless over time making them look older and really bringing down the feel any area. By stripping and resealing, you can restore the original appearance of your surfaces and eliminate the cost of laying new flooring.

Depending on the sealer used there are two strategies; a penetrating sealer will handle aggressive cleaning such as scouring and strong cleaning products.
A surface sealer requires a gentler approach, for example soft mops, vacuum and non-aggressive cleaning products. Our operator onsite can advise you of the correct cleaning regime for you floor.
Mop up spillage immediately with warm soapy water.
If you are getting your floors sealed, then you should keep in mind that it usually takes around 4 hours before your tiles are touch dry, however the sealer takes up to 24 hours to fully cure which means that you are not allowed to mop the floor or allow it to get wet for at least 24 hours after the job has been completed.
It usually takes around 4 hours before your tiles are touch dry, which means that you can walk on them and even return most furniture items after 4 hours of completing the job, however you can not mop the tiles, or allow them to become wet for at least 24 hours as that can potentially wash off the sealer as it takes up to 24 hours to fully cure. You should not return rugs to the floor for at least 24 hours after the job has been completed, since the rug will stop your tiles from breathing before the sealer is fully cured.
