Stone Polishing FAQs
Many suspect a highly polished concrete floor would become more slippery-and thus more of a problem. Contrary to common perception, the degree of polish or shine is not directly related to slip resistance. Just because polished concrete is shiny doesn't mean it is slippery. If the right processes are applied both internally and/or externally, testing has shown that polished concrete will meet or exceed Australia/New Zealand standards for slip resistance. (Please bear in mind any floor finish can become slippery when wet.)
No, topical sealers create a membrane, film, or barrier that prevents the penetrating sealers from absorbing into the surface. Applying a penetrating sealer to a surface, requires any topical sealer to be removed prior to application.
Polished concrete pricing is basically dependent upon how many levels of grinding will be required to get the floor to a suitably smooth surface.
Polished concrete is one of the most sustainable flooring options today. Polishing the structural slab of a building, instead of harvesting resources to cover it, prevents waste and is extremely long lasting.
Concrete surfaces are subject to deterioration and degradation of appearance through traffic, UV rays, moisture, rain, chemicals, and other impurities such as oil, gas, grease, acids and salt. This can easily result in common problems such as cracking, pitting, scaling, spalling, delamination, dusting, discolouration, efflorescence, salt damage, etc. Concrete sealing offers excellent maintenance benefits when quality products are used such as Australia's Deepshieldâ„¢ deep impregnating sealers.
Polished concrete on its own is quite stain resistant, but many solutions can seep into the pores to create a stain, or even etch the floor. A sealer will line the pores to keep most stains suspended at the surface of the concrete, not allowing the stain to penetrate the floor and further preventing the likelihood of staining.
Your new polished concrete floor, with the proper care, will last a lifetime. But like anything else, your surfaces will need a little attention from time to time to make sure they are holding up against the demands you place on it.
Mechanical, dry-grind concrete polishing is a fairly clean process, grinding will create a slurry, and can get a bit messy, but with the dry-grind process, a vacuum system is used in conjunction with the grinder to contain 98% of the airborne particles. The remainder of the dust is then easily swept up and removed in plastic bags.
Most concrete sealers dry fairly quickly and are usually touch-dry after 4 hours. This is true of both penetrating and topical sealers. Penetrating sealers usually fully cure in 24 hours with topical sealers generally taking up to 48 hours to fully dry.
Polished concrete is one of the easiest floors to maintain, and does not require aggressive cleaners or brushes to lift dirt away. Our technicians and customer service will go through all necessary maintainence options with you and answer any questions you may have.
- The best daily maintenance is simply using a dust mop with some gritless sweeping compound to remove dirt and debris.
- If your polished concrete is situated in a large work area, an autoscrubber can be used with super soft brushes and a gentle cleaner designed for polished concrete, to suspend dirt off the floor and squeegee it dry.
Almost any concrete floor. Floors which are saturated with oil, or are in environments where they will constantly be exposed to acids, are probably not ideal for a polished concrete floor. Whether a new construction or a 100 year old slab, most concrete floors can benefit greatly from the aesthetic, durability, and longevity of polishing.
This will depend on the size of the area; larger jobs can require up to 3 days to polish while polishing a bench-top can take up to half a day. Tile Cleaners® will try to ensure work is completed within the same day to avoid as much disruption to your home or business as possible.
Polished concrete is one of the easiest surfaces to maintain, and does not require aggressive cleaners or brushes to lift dirt away. The best way to keep your polished concrete in good condition is to use a pH neutral cleaner followed by clean water for spills, otherwise a microfibre mop will get rid of dust.
Move all furniture and items off the floor so it is ready for when we arrive.
Tile Cleaners® technicians can help to move items that one person could be expected to move such as furniture with wheels, light furniture, tables and chairs, however as Tile Cleaners® insurance covers our restoration services, we will not be held liable for any damage caused to furniture or property you request our technicians to move.
We recommend that you measure each room separately. The simplest way to measure is by multiplying the width by the length. For example a room that is 3 meters long and 2 meters wide is 3 X 2 = 6m2 in total.
Tile Cleaners® charge per square meter for each separate room. There is a price list on the Tile Cleaners® website for you to review. Before we begin our work we will measure each room individually, confirm the work to be carried out as well as confirm all costs with you.

Stone based tiles are usually more porous requiring more attention than man made tiles, which is why its extremely important to use correct products and equipment to restore your tiles to their best possible condition.
Most of our procedures use water in order to minimise dust production. Polishing can create a slurry, however by employing state-of-the-art equipment and our years of expertise, once finished your surfaces will be left in their best possible condition.
Yes, the mechanical resurfacing process used to polish your floors will remove all coatings, resulting in your floors being in an "as new" condition. Once honed, you should reseal your surfaces with a deep penetrating, impregnating sealer, which avoids staining and will reduce the effect of soiling.

No, the floor is not stain proof. It is more stain resistant than a regular concrete floor because the pores in the floor are closed up so tight that it keeps liquids on the surface longer looking for a way to penetrate, allowing for a longer time to respond in getting spills cleaned up. However if a liquid is left long enough on the surface stains may result. We recommend sealing your surface with Deepshieldâ„¢ impregnating sealer which seals the micro pores of your polished concrete and will last for up to 10 years.

To keep your concrete surfaces looking new, Tile Cleaners® recommend cleaning each week with a mild detergent to remove any dirt or grime from the concrete surface. Strong detergents(strong acid or alkali) may affect the sealer, mild detergents and pH neutral substances are strongly recommended.
Yes we can. Efflorescence is a build up of salts and can be removed with efflorescence removers and other specialised cleaning techniques. Efflorescence is typically caused by a leakage behind the concrete or through damaged grout lines. The efflorescence can be removed but it is important the cause of the efflorescence is resoled.
Efflorescence is a problem that concrete and most porous surfaces can face. It's the tendency of the water in the concrete to bring salts from the material to the surface as it evaporates. The water evaporates leaving the salts on the surface resulting in a whitish coating and ruining its finish. The only way to avoid this problem is to seal your concrete with one of our highest quality water resistant sealer's and to stop the source of the water that is penetrating the concrete, for example a water pipe leak or damaged grout.
The best time to have your concrete sealed is immediately after installation to prevent any accidental staining or damage. You will know that concrete needs sealing once you start noticing patchy sealed areas of the floor and/or your concrete starts staining easier.
A matte (up to 100 grit) or even low sheen (400 grit) can be used outdoors, but polished concrete with a high sheen is not recommended.
It depends on the type of sealer used and the amount of foot traffic the polished concrete is being exposed to. Australia's Deepshieldâ„¢ range of deep impregnating water based sealers, offer long term benefits with Deepshieldâ„¢ Gold lasting up to 15 years. Topical sealer's have a life expectancy of around 3 years. If you have a high amount of foot traffic or perhaps severe weather conditions, you may experience a shorter lifetime. Sealing your polished concrete may also depend on the surfaces condition. Once surfaces start showing patchy areas and begin to stain easily then you should have them resealed. Give us a call and we can assist you with all your enquiries.

Honing and polishing produce fairly opposite results. Polishing produces a smooth reflective finish while honing produces a more matte finish.
No, we specialize in the polishing or grinding of the concrete, however we do have concreters that we work with and can recommend to you.
As a general rule, concrete should be allowed to cure for 28 days prior to grinding.
It will be necessary to "hand" finish against fixed obstacles. Our technicians will do this during the process.
In most cases yes we can. The concrete would have to be in very poor condition not to be able to achieve a polished concrete finish.
The process is virtually dust free. There is no airborne dust due to the use of Hepa filter vacuum systems. There will be some residual dust left on the floor but it will be vacuumed up between steps by another filtered vacuum. A little dust is created when using hand held grinders, however this is removed between each grinding stage.

Polished concrete flooring can be walked on during the grind and polish process. There is no 'cure' time since it is a mechanical process. If a sealer is used, 4 hours is typically required before foot traffic can be resumed.
Yes and the best thing about it is that it will never be as involved as the initial process. Normally it will only take a couple of steps to reach the end result required.
When laying a new slab, a wide range of coloured concretes and coloured aggregates are available for you to choose from.
Yes, however it is always best to use a pH neutral cleaner to suspend the dirt so it can be cleaned off the floor instead of just spread around on the floor and leaving a hazy film on the surface.

Some advantages of proper polishing is the floor surface becomes shiny and protected against wear and tear and stains, you will end up saving time and money having it down right the first time Polishing of vinyl and linoleum floors is relatively unsophisticated. Without polishing, linoleum and vinyl floors appear dull and matted and become progressively susceptible to getting dirty, stained and damaged.
A freshly stripped floor requires that a minimum of 3 layers of polish for acceptable gloss and surface protection.
The polish is the uppermost layer of your vinyl or linoleum flooring that prevents dirt and liquids from penetrating and staining the floor. It should be reapplied regularly. While some companies recommend that this be done once or twice per year, others once every several damp cleanings and the rest as the appearance dictates, the truth is it should be done periodically, at least twice a year.
Yes we buff floors so special occasions often and it happens to be one of our specialties. If it's a wedding or a party we will have your floors looking shiny and new for your special day or night.
Over time, vinyl floors lose their sheen due to built up dirt and grime. Abrasion due to heels under footwear or rollers under chairs cause scratches and fine cuts on the sealed layers of your vinyl floors. These scratches and cuts act as cavities, attracting fine dirt particles to settle between them. High speed buffing can normally remove fine scratches and built up dirt so that floors return to a sparking shine. After we strip, clean and seal your vinyl floor it will be pristine. The vinyl has probably lost some of its gloss and developed some tiny scratches on the surface so buffing will make it look smoother and shinier. The smooth shiny floor will be easier to keep clean with just water or a mild cleaning solution for suture cleaning. You won't need to re-buff for a while and they will be looking the best they possible can.
The application of polish to vinyl flooring is usually a simple task - but one that must be carried out correctly if the final finish is to be of a high standard. This involves stripping the previous polish using manufacturers approved products and applying a new layer. The floor should be cleaned and rinsed thoroughly. Once totally dry - and at this time probably appearing quite dull - Tile Cleaners® technicians apply polish and buff the surface using our buffing machines to achieve maximum shine, surface gloss and durability. It is very important not to over-apply polish - floors should have a 'wet-look' finish with no opaque streaks visible - if there are streaks it means that the polish is being spread too thickly - drying time and finish will suffer if polish is over-applied.
"Polish" is a substance that is applied to a surface to protect it and enhance its appearance. So for porous floors, the polish is applied on top of the seal, to give your floor its shine - and to protect the seal! The idea is that polish can be reapplied and maintained fairly easily, leaving the seal in place to protect the floor surface.
The term "polish" can be used to describe different services by different companies, however when it comes to vinyl floor "polishing" is just another way of saying sealing and buffing.
